Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive bacterium that can cause pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, and infections of the ears and sinuses. Young and elderly patients are at higher risk for contracting S. pneumoniae, as are patients with weakened immune systems or preexisting lung conditions.
